We have recently moved into a three story house and the worst part about vacuuming is doing the stairs, with so many stairs I knew a hand held vacuum would be the solution. I choose Dyson because we have had an upright Dyson for about 10 years now and the suction is still really good (if you keep up to cleaning the filters).

Upon receiving this DC34 I found it well packaged with a modest number of accessories, the unit itself is very lightweight, almost like a child’s toy. The suction power is nowhere near that of my upright mains powered Dyson however it does do the job required well and it is quick and easy to empty. I particularly like the main attachment that offers duel function (much better than having two separate attachments). Not only is it perfect for the stairs but I’ve also found it ideal for light fittings, cob webbed room corners and crumbs in the kitchen. The battery soon runs out if you get carried away.

Since buying the DC34 I quickly realised that I would need a wall mounting bracket that would allow me to store it neatly and also charge at the same time. This is the one that I purchased http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006YSTX6Y/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00. More than ideal for the job but expensive for what it is and with the price tag of the DC34 I would really have expected this to come for free.

In summary the let downs of this product are the cost of the unit and accessories, the battery life and the limited suction power. However having said that in use there are many other features that redeem it and make it worth the 4 stars I have given.

The Problems persist, 26 April 2012

Straight out of the box this looks great. Sleek, lighter than the early models & easy to hold.
Charging is via a ‘plug-in’ charger that has a green light which goes out once this is done. The Dyson’s used to come with a cradle that you could screw into the wall & slip the vacuum into but these cost extra now.
The suction is a big improvement on the early designs too as is the staying power which, despite what the ‘blurb’ may say, is about 7 minutes on ordinary mode and 4 minutes or so on extra.
This may not seem like long but this is for small jobs not vacuuming the house. So for doing the car or a long set of stairs this is spot on.
The fact it can be almost completely taken apart means even fine dust that makes a complete mess can be vacuumed. Just remember to clean the filters!
Problems? Well a smaller one is that the Dyson ‘trap door’ beneath the cyclone where you empty the dirt from continues to stick at times and dirt & dust get caught too easily in it.
There remain too many extras to buy but too little provided.
The main problem though is a big one. The batteries suck even more than the vacuum. I’m afraid that Dyson have still not managed or maybe bothered to get to grips with the fact that when people pay close to £150 for this item they expect the battery to last longer than 18 months. It doesn’t. You’ll eventually find the item keeps cutting out. This begins to happen more & more often until in the end a new battery is the only solution.
So another £40-50 is then needed to make it work properly once more.
This has the potential to be a great product but far too much time spent on yet another redesign & far too little spent on a long term battery solution means this may work well for a while but it will eventually require a hefty cash injection to keep it running long term.
      A real disappointment unfortunately.

A friend of mine said this was the best thing she’d bought recently, so I did the same. She was right; it’s wonderful and the more I use it, the more uses I can find for it. The attachments are excellent, and the brush extension is very well designed. But then, it’s a Dyson, so one would expect the very best. I’ve dispensed with my dustpan and brush – this product is so much more efficient. Easy to use, easy to store and easy to maintain.
