The weapon of choice for me, 4 Jan. 2015

Ok Its probably a sweeping generalisation (excuse the pun) but blokes don’t like vacuuming. As it happens this bloke does quite a lot so I choose weapons which work hard for their keep.We live in the Lake District, wear wellies and have a collie who never wipes her feet.
I have an aging Dyson DC7 so here are some comparisons.
    The Vax is:
Much less expensive and has a six year warranty
More powerful so removes deeper grit
    Lighter (by a country mile)
Physically smaller so can get into those places you hate the most.
Switchable in the brush department so you can fluff up your shag pile or just suck up the bits.
Noticeable quieter in the engine room.

So why not 5 stars ?

A positive and a negative. This thing sticks to the carpet like a terrier on a postman’s turn-up which does make it hard to push.
The handle is essentially a plastic hose extension and is very uncomfortable when doing all that pushing. My palm is still smarting.

The dust container is quite small so needs emptying more often. (The one task more hated that vacuuming itself ?)

I have given the DC7 away today so that most be some kind of endorsement !!

Fantastic cleaning power and an inexpensive alternative to a Dyson, 31 Dec. 2014

I was amazed at how much dirt and pet hair came out of my carpet on first use (despite the fact that we were previously using a Dyson).
    Plus points:
I found this machine lighter and more maneuverable than my Dyson (Animal, upright, older model) and it gets right up to the edge of skirting boards and under the bed with ease.
I like the light above the brush that is green when the brush is in operation and will change to red if the brush gets clogged.
Very easy to empty with no bag required.
Dusting tool (included) excellent and easy to use on light fittings, ceiling coving, etc with the extension hose (included).
Turbo tool (included) brilliant on furniture for removing any pet hair.
Excellent on hard floors too as the brush can be turned off for these with just one touch of a button.
Very long lead is a useful feature for large areas.
Really brings up the pile beautifully on older carpets.

    Minus points
This is a VERY powerful machine. The forward sweep is easier than the pull-back sweep and as I have a back problem, I found that I needed to use both hands and pull the machine straight towards me as this machine REALLY grips the floor!
You will find that this amount of suction power makes cleaning lighter-weight rugs difficult unless you have someone to stand on the other end of the rug while you vacuum as the rug just gets lifted off the floor!

    Overall Verdict?
Delighted with the cleaning performance at a truly brilliant price. My carpets look really nice and hard floor cleaning is very easy indeed.

A good budget vacuum; great for dirty/hairy pets. Beware if you are unfit and your carpets aren’t nailed to the floor!, 12 Dec. 2014

I have a 15 year old Dyson upright which I was looking to replace; I also have a Numatic Henry. The Vax seemed to offer the same sort of vacuum as Dyson at a much cheaper price (£99 when I purchased) so I thought I would try it. As with any machine there are always plus and minus points so I will try to list all the ones I have found in the two weeks I have been using it and hope that other would-be purchasers will find my comments useful. Just for reference purposes, I’m a fit woman in my 60s with no mobility problems.

+ it is very lightweight and can be lifted in one hand (4.9 kg/11lbs according to the instruction book)
+ it has a long flex which means it will reach into more than one room
+ it has great suction which is ideal for getting up fine mud and hairs if you have pets
+ the hose and stair gadget work very well (unlike my Dyson) and joy of joys, the stair gadget fits the pipe of Henry too
+ the brush bar can easily be switched on and off and the suction, when it is off, is not diminished so it is excellent on hard floors
+ you can see the brush bar through the transparent plastic so it’s easy to spot when it needs to be cleared of hair

    – the massive suction means it’s useless on loose rugs unless you use the hand tools – back to Henry!
    – the suction can be so fierce that you need to be pretty fit to push it backwards and forwards because it literally “glues” itself to the carpet, if you use this vacuum every day you can cancel the gym subscription
    – the dust container is much smaller than the Dyson so it needs to be emptied more often
    – dismantling the dust container to clean the filters is fiddly, I spent 10 minutes trying to get it back into position; this may improve as I get more familiar with it
    – the handle doesn’t always stay in position, mine moves up and down rather too easily as I’m manoeuvring it round the floor
    – stowing the flex is not easy, the amount of space allowed by the two hooks is not sufficient for the length of flex

I’ve also noticed it is easier to vacuum my upstairs carpets which have a longer pile and are much newer than my rather elderly living room carpet where the pile has been squashed flat by years of (ab)use.
Overall, I’m pleased with my new Vax which complements my Henry very well but I won’t be sending the old Dyson to the tip just yet.
