    {Edited after 3 months use: Please see end for latest horrors}

    We bought this to replace an 5 year old Dyson that had finally burnt itself out. Not wanting to shell out £3-400 for another we went for a Vax gambling on the fact that it couldn’t be three to four times worse than a Dyson. Happily it isn’t but neither is it half as good. In fact it is unbelievable rubbish.

    What do you get for your money?
    Well a vacuum cleaner and some bits, what else would one expect?

    Plus points.
    This is a light and reasonably manoeuvrable beast . There is no lugging this thing about and you don’t get the feeling that if you pull the upright along by the hose the hose will be damaged, it won’t.

    The flex is long enough for most houses I would have thought, unless you have very long rooms.

    Minus points
    The first time I used this it did a remarkable thing. Because it was clean the plastic cylinder gave me the perfect view of a ball of dust suspended rotating mid cylinder like a thing possessed. As time went on this ball grew and grew and became more and more fascinating. Two uses later and the ball was firmly wedged in the top of the cylinder and required extraction. It keeps doing this and it is very annoying as the power drops afterwards. It’s not a pleasant job either. Like all ‘bag less’ cleaners emptying the thing is a messy job.

    Secondly the designer of this needs re-education. The flex is stored at the back of the machine wrapped around two moveable lugs. This is not apparent from the pictures displayed on this site as the flex is missing. That is because they have only just allowed enough room between the lugs and the hose to fit all the flex, which keeps falling off if it isn’t stowed correctly. I suspect the photographer couldn’t get the flex to stay on the machine either! This is a small gripe I know but boy is it irritating.

    The hose when in use has to be detached from the back of the machine and connected to the handle. On a Dyson this is already done and when upright the machine works straight off. With the Vax you have to turn off the machine, disassemble the hose and handle, connect everything, watch them fall apart, reconnect them and then attach the end piece. Pointless. The hose when not in use is mounted at the back on a couple of channels. As I noted above it is too close to the flex and the channels are only just wide enough to hold it. The flex and hose are constantly competing to see which can snag the other or fall off first. Really annoying.

    The end piece for the hose, which on the more expensive version has a bespoke holder (but not on this one), is destined to break soon or be misplaced. Rather than three individual pieces it is two, cleverly connected by a central push button on the longer piece. This flimsy apparatus has the added bonus that, in order to work, the long piece used for edges (the main machine won’t clean edges BTW) has a split end which reduces the already woeful suction power of the hose. A second design fault is that the hose ensemble is connected to the cylinder by a washer only. When the hose is placed against the carpet the suction power is broken by this washer parting from the cylinder. Stubborn dirt or lumps of mud are therefore not picked up by this machine.

    When used upright with the hose the Vax does the same trick as the old Dyson it replaced in that it leaves a wide band of dirt on the carpet underneath the machine which needs re-cleaning.

    The flex is not only difficult to stow it is also low quality and is flexible enough to be sucked into the machine so watch out you don’t run over it. More accurately the flex is likely to wrap around the roller as the suction power isn’t quite enough to lift it but either way it will be rapidly damaged.

    The machine is called a ‘floor-2-floor’ simply because it has a roller sweeper which can be set to carpet or tile. Huzzah! It seems to make no difference what so ever to the cleaning power.

    [Edited after 3 months]
    After 3 months usage the power of the machine has dropped incredibly. It now deposits more dirt on the carpet than it picks up leaving the carpet stripped with dust marks. Unbelievable! When upright it deposits what little it picks up straight back onto the carpet under the machine so that you end up hovering twice. It did this initially but now it is far far worse. It is down to the design which is poor and the fact that nothng fits together properly from the cylinder housing to the hose attachments.

    All together a pile of what it don’t pick up. Avoid at all costs.
    [End of edit]

    All in all you get what you pay for. I paid £99 for this from Argos and I would take it back if I thought they’d accept it – we’ve had it a couple of months. It does clean so it is not faulty it is just very badly designed. Looks like I…
